Scientific Pluralism: Masterclass with Helen Longino (Call for Applications)

12.07.2021 – 16.07.2021

We are happy to announce that Professor Helen Longino is coming to us online for our 12th Munich Philosophical Masterclass, "Scientific Pluralism: Arguments and Implications," on July 12, 14, and 16, 2021. Helen Longino is the Clarence Irving Lewis Professor of Philosophy at Stanford University, and her inventive and influential contributions to the philosophy of science, social epistemology, and feminist philosophy will be the topics of this masterclass.

If you are interested in discussing Professor Longino's work on the social dimensions of scientific knowledge, with a focus on the role of values in scientific inquiry, Contextual Empiricism, pluralism in the sciences and its applications, and related issues in a small group of motivated students, please apply with a letter of motivation by May 8, 2021.

We are looking to have a diverse group of around 15 to 20 participants. We very much welcome applications from students at any university and both from graduate, including doctoral, and undergraduate students. Please, however, note that, for administrative reasons, we will have to admit philosophy students at the University of Munich with some preference.

Participants should be active in the masterclass. The letter of motivation should state why you are interested in participating and in which ways you have already engaged with the topic or with Professor Longino's work in particular. It is not a prerequisite to have done so, however. The letter of motivation should not exceed 500 words and can be much shorter than the limit.

Please include general information about your background, including at which university you are studying, and send your application to philosophischer-meisterkurs@lrz.uni-muenchen.de by May 8, 2021 (CEST). We will let you know about the outcome by May 11.

In order to prepare for the masterclass, participants are expected to attend a weekly preparatory seminar that will take place on Fridays, from May 14 to July 9. Both the masterclass and the preparatory seminar will be held in English.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We are very much looking forward to your applications!
