Philosophy of Psychiatry

This proposed course will focus on theoretical, mainly epistemological, topics in the philosophy of psychiatry. We will think about what mental disorders are, how they can be explained, and how they should be classified. While our readings will be mainly philosophical in nature, they will be informed by psychiatric research.

The main reading for this course is Dominic Murphy's (2006) Psychiatry in the Scientific Image. It is an impressive exemplar of philosophy of special science, both deeply informed by philosophy of science and psychiatry. Murphy aims to give what he calls a revisionist and objective account of psychiatric concepts, amenable to empirical scientific inquiry, detached from folk psychological concepts, and, ultimately, closely tied to cognitive neuroscience. He suggests that mental disorders are brain disorders with psychological consequences. This book will provide a thorough introduction into the philosophy of psychiatry, but allows for studying important topics in depth, will invite critical discussion, and be a chance to engage in some metadiscourse about how philosophy of psychiatry should best proceed, given the double nature of the field as a research domain with far reaching impacts on both clinical practice and society.

Meaning of Life in Analytical Philosophy

[english below]

Das Ziel des Lektürekurses is es folgende Fragen besser zu verstehen, sowie einige Antworten kennenzulernen: What is the meaning of life? What is meant by “meaning“? Is the existence of God necessary for my life to be meaningful? Is the meaning of my life subjective or objective? Do I give my life my own meaning? If not, what can make my life meaningful? Reaching certain goals, establishing relationships, being productive, being moral, acquiring knowledge, appreciating beauty?

[english]
If you ask a layman about what it means to study philosophy, the meaning of life is often mentioned. In fact, this topic has been pondered since ancient times, but only in recent decades has the issue been revisited and addressed in analytical philosophy, which is why new theories have recently been developed and subsequently categorized.

A good introduction to the analytical philosophy of the Meaning of/in Life is the 2008 book "Meaning in Life: An analytical study" by Thaddeus Metz, which will be read together in this reading course. First, we will get a rough overview of the different theories before clarifying the questions of what is actually meant by "meaning" and why it is something valuable.
In the main part, two categories of theories on Meaning of/in Life will be presented: "Supernaturalism", which holds that meaning in life depends on supernatural/transcendent entities such as God or an (immortal) soul, and "Naturalism", which holds that the meaning of life is found in the empirically experienceable world.

The aim of the reading course is to better understand the following questions and to hear some answers: What is the meaning of life? What is meant by "meaning"? Is the existence of God necessary for my life to be meaningful? Is the meaning of my life subjective or objective? Do I give my life my own meaning? If not, what can make my life meaningful? Reaching certain goals, establishing relationships, being productive, being moral, acquiring knowledge, appreciating beauty?

For each session, the average reading is about 20 pages. The literature is in English, the reading course can be conducted in German or English according to your wishes.

Philosophy of Psychedelics

We will investigate the psychedelic experience under various philosophical point of views. Questions that we will potentially encounter include:
  • Can we gain insights into the fundamental nature of the world through the use of psychedelics? Or experiences in a hallucinatory state cannot lead to true beliefs by definition?
  • In recent years, the efficacy of psychedelic therapy has been empirically proven. Can one argue that it works because patients are deluded through hallucinatory experiences? If so, is it ethical to cure mental illnesses by convincing patients of comforting falsehoods?
  • Can we naturalise mystic experiences happening thanks to the use of psychedelics? Should we do it or is it a subtle form of cultural colonisation with respect to people already using such substances, e.g. indigenous Mexicans?
  • What can we learn about the nature of consciousness by observing the effects of psychedelics?
  • Is it immoral to intake psychedelics for people who hold that one shall not intoxicate themselves, e.g. Muslims? Or can one argue that it is not a form of intoxication?
  • What ontologies can best explain the psychedelic experience? Materialism? Idealism? Spinoza’s? Whitehead’s? Zen Buddhism’s?
  • In what ways do psychoactive drugs modify the self? And how are these modifications realised aesthetically, within literature or music for example?

Frege – Was ist Denken?

  • Kursleitung: Nico Attenberger
  • E-Mail: niatte@icloud.com
  • Zeit: Donnerstag, 18 bis 20 c.t.
  • Raum: Ludwigstr. 28, Rückgebäude - Raum 025 (Raumfinder)
  • Kursbeschreibung:

  • Was ist Philosophie?
